Tribute from Mentor Earle Hagen
Being selected to participate in the Earle Hagen Film Scoring Workshop was a prize sought after by many a professional composer. Bruce Babcock was so nominated to study under the master in 1974.
The dean of film scoring educators, mentored himself by the great Alfred Newman, in the ensuing years has called on Bruce Babcock's musical talents countless times.
Earle Hagen recalls, “Bruce approached me with a tape and asked me to listen to it. He had written some pieces for large orchestra. I thought the compositions and the orchestration were outstanding.”

But it was more than approval of an up-and-coming film scorer. The legendary composer of “Harlem Nocturne” and the infectious “Andy Griffith Theme” was greatly impressed.
“I called him the next morning and asked him if he would like to work with me. He said he would, and that started a long and warm relationship.”
Earle Hagen recalls, “we worked together on a lot of projects.” Among the series Bruce Babcock was a member of the Hagen team were “The Dukes of Hazard” and “Mike Hammer.”
But music for television series was only part of their collaborative efforts. States the author of the definitive text Scoring for Films, “when I retired and taught a Film Scoring class for BMI, Bruce helped me and took over some of the teaching.” This assistance also included critiquing of the submissions of workshop students.
Additionally, Bruce Babcock went on to serve as editor for Earle Hagen's second book on the art of composing for the screen, Advanced Techniques for Films.
Commenting on a recent Babcock composition, Earle Hagen has observed in 2003, “Bruce Babcock is knowledgeable, studied and, in command of his art. He is an exceptional composer, orchestrator and arranger.”
Speaking of Bruce Babcock on a more personal level, he says, “besides, he is one helluva guy,” adding that since those early days, “we have remained close friends."
No surprise about that. They are two of the genuine Nice Guys of Hollywood.
